Agroforestry in the Téra Department
Even though the Téra department is relatively close to the country's capital Niamey, the region is largely isolated. Due to a rapid growth of the population over the past años there have been repeated hunger crises. The soil has been cleared and is drained and eroded due to depletion.
Combined techniques of cultivation and use – successfully applied in other parts of the country – are unknown in the department of Téra. Trainings and interchange trips to neighboring regions are now sensitizing the people to techniques of erosion control, recuperation of crusted soil, reforestation, extension of irrigated cultivation, biodiversity and alternate sources of income. The basic values of equality, gender equality, involvement of the population and sustainable management are very important to the project coordinators.
«Drivers of change»
The pilot group consists of about 400 people and their families who are part of this enterprise and will pass on their knowledge throughout the region.

The Foundation Board concedes the continued funding of the model project in Téra. With the support of local partner ADROC, about 150 local families will be in charge of planting and cultivating the trees as well as constructing installations to prevent erosion. The project participants serve as disseminators and share their knowledge. Agroforestry improves the soil quality. The trees provide forage, fertilizer, wood and fruit. The microclimate can improve when the right trees are planted. The project participants perceive the improved soil quality and the chance to obtain higher incomes with the sale of harvested products as an opportunity to secure their families’ nutrition.
